South Austin
You will find a little bit of everything in South Austin. From the wide open green spaces of Barton Springs, to the funky “weird Austin” South Congress (SoCo) vibes, to St. Edward’s University that is home to more than students, to the quiet, residential communities south of Hwy. 290.
The west side of the area is home to Zilker Park, a sprawling 350 acre space perfect for relaxing by the water, going for a run on the hike and bike trail or spending time with furry friends at the dog park. Barton Springs spring-fed swimming pool is another Austin treasure where you can take a dip in the chilly 68 degree water year-round. So when temperatures are in the 100’s in August, you know where to cool off. South Austin is a very active community and home to many of young professionals.
South Congress Ave is one of the most well-known areas in Austin for its local shops, cafes, live music, and nightlife. You’ll find that this is a popular tourist spot as it still embodies the “Keep Austin Weird” mantra. The small shops and swank eateries are quickly being accompanied by new construction and larger brands but the locals insist on keeping the vibe as weird as possible. The population is on the younger side and mostly single.
